Vetcon 2023
Last week I took the 2 hour drive up to Sacremento to attend Vetcon, a historical wargames convention ran by Dave Partak, one of the founding members of the SBGC. Unlike the rest of the local conventions I attend, which also hold roleplaying and board games, this one was purely for miniature wargames. Due to the distance, and my work schedule, I was only able to attend on Saturday, but it was still well worth the drive. I got to see a bunch good friends from the SBGC and met several other wargamers from the north Bay Area.
I stayed for about 11 hours and managed to fit 4 games into that time. I played in Nick Stern's Paraguayan invasion game, I got to learn how to play DBA, an ACW game and had a lot of fun playing Dave Partak's Gunfighter's Ball match, a very bloody western/cowboy game. I loved Gunfighter's Ball so much that I've made it a goal to start up a western miniatures collection and to run the game myself sometime in the future. But not anytime soon, I've got more than enough unpainted projects in my pile of shame.
Aside from the games and the people, another great thing about Vetcon was the bring-and-buy. As everyone was a miniature wargamer, all the stuff being sold was pertinent to my interests. I made out like absolute bandit. I was on the fence about down scaling my Vietnam project from 28mm to 15mm, but I managed to snag a huge collection of miniatures and rules for 15mm Vietnam wargaming, which tipped me over the edge. I also was given a decently sized army of painted 15mm Marian Romans for DBA, which will go perfectly with the Marian Roman army I purchased at Pacificon.
All in all, I'm really glad I got off my ass and decided to make the drive up to Sacramento to attend and I can't wait to attend next year!
